Rašytojas, 1945 m. įkalintas už Stalino kritiką privačiuose laiškuose, patyręs lagerį ir vidaus tremtį. „Viena Ivano Denisovičiaus diena“, apie lagerio kasdienybę, 1962 m. leista publikuoti SSRS. Vėliau jo kūryba vėl varžyta; „Gulago archipelagas“ Vakaruose pasirodė 1973 m., o 1974 m. jis prievarta išsiųstas iš SSRS. Ši kaita rodo, kad leidimo ribos priklausė nuo politinių aplinkybių.
