XVIII a. Vilniuje gyvenęs iškilus žydų rabinas, Talmudo ir Toros komentatorius, vienas didžiausių visų laikų judaizmo autoritetų. Dėl jo veiklos ir įkurtos ješivos (dvasinės akademijos) Vilnius tapo pasauliniu žydų intelektualinio gyvenimo centru ir pelnė „Šiaurės Jeruzalės“ vardą. Jo asmenybė atspindi LDK kultūros įvairovę.
