„Madagaskaras“ yra postmodernistinė drama, kurioje istorija tampa ne faktų rekonstrukcija, o kūrybine interpretacija. Kūriniui būdingas intertekstualumas: veikėjai turi istorinius ir kultūrinius prototipus, o tarpukario Lietuvos problemos perrašomos groteskiška, autoironiška kalba. Pokšto idėja perkelti Lietuvą į Afriką leidžia svarstyti mažos tautos tragizmą, geopolitinį nesaugumą ir lietuviškos tapatybės paieškas. Tačiau Ivaškevičius šios idėjos neidealizuoja: tautos gelbėjimo planas pjesėje nuolat susiduria su žmogaus kūnu, meile, laisve, moteriškumu ir moralinėmis ribomis.
